In medieval times their was a class system where Kings were at the top. Then there were nobles, followed by knights, and then finally there were the peasants and serfs who had to do all of the work on the land. On the class system Serfs were the lowest part of the class system and were said to be part of the manor that they worked on and were considered property. If a serf were to escape from his manor and stay hidden for a year and a half, he would then have his freedom and be a peasant which was not much better. Peasants lived in small homes with very little land. They were forced to keep their animals with them inside of their home for the winter because they didn't have a barn to keep them in. Peasants worked on land for little pay and protection from the invading groups such as the vikings.
Above the peasants were the knights who would protect nobles from invaders and were given land from their nobleman to live on along with payment and they were given honor. They Began their training when they were seven and trained for thirteen years until they turned twenty. They would then be deemed a knight if the king felt they were worthy. Usually thirteen year old noble girls would marry men who were twenty because of all the extensive training knights had. When girls were seven they would go to another castle and learn to become a lady to learn how to cook and clean. To be a noble you had to be born into nobility and you needed to be the oldest of your family. If you were not the oldest boy in a nobles family you would become either a knight,or you would become a clergy if you didn't have the skill to become a knight. The highest social class you could be was the king and you would rule with divine power, meaning you would rule and be blessed by God. The only person who could tell the king what to do would be the church and pope because of medieval Europeans catholic belief.
