Manors
Manors acted like cities owned by nobles. Kings would give the Nobles land for their manor in exchange for protection. On the manor nobles made all of the decisions along with being the judge, deciding sentences to those who committed crime. All the farming done on a manor would be done by serfs and peasants who only fielded to get protection and for fear of leaving.
The size of a manor would depend on the wealth of the noble who owned it. The wealthier the noble the bigger the manor.
Peasants would work on the land of the manor for a small pay and protection from vikings and other invading groups. Nobles would make their manors look elegant and have many designs in the structures to impress other Nobles. All manors in the middle ages had to be self sufficient because if people left to trade with other places they would be robbed by invaders.
