In medieval times the pope had complete power over all people in Europe including the king. The church had lots of money because people would buy indulgences to be forgiven of sins. that The money was spent building large extravagant cathedrals where they would have mass. When you would confess sins to the priest they would charge you a fee to have your sins forgiven.
If you did something against the church they would excommunicate you which means you would be shunned by the people and would no longer be protected by your noble. Because many people could not read the bible they could not challenge the church and what they said even though what they did was against the bible's teachings. The church also said that if you did not pay your taxes you could not go to heaven. In a manor, everybody would take take a break from work and participate in mass including the serfs and peasants in hopes of a better life after death.
